JACEK SALIJ'S THE CONTEMPORARY APOLOGY OF CHURCH
Nowadays speaking about the Church and defending it is a very big challenge. However a Polish Dominican Jacek Salij is not afraid of this task and he performs a kind of apology for the Church. In this article in several points the author shows originality and timeliness of the ecclesiological thought of Jacek Salij. The great advantage of his theology is communication and imagery. Certainly the apology of Church of the Black Friar gives modern man a new look at the Church.

SOMMARIO

HE MISSION OF THE CHURCH AND HER DIALOGUE WITH THE WORLD. A COMPARISON OF THE CONCILIAR PROJECTS OF PIERRE HAUBTMANN AND KAROL WOJTYŁA
Summary
The article presents the debate which took place during few days on February 1965 in Ariccia (near Rome), where the members of the subcommittee of doctrine “Gaudium et spes" met to prepare the pastoral constitution. Two projects were compared. The first one was that of Pierre Haubtmann from Paris and the second one that of Karol Wojtyła from Cracow. The role of the catholic community in forming interhuman relationship, dialogue and the significance of social doctrine of the Church were underlined in Haubtmann's project, and as well a Christian vision of the world was presented. The second project showed the theological principles of Church's mission in today's world with special attention given to religious freedom and the identity of believers. The supernatural, salvific character of the Church's activity was stressed as an essential perspective in her relationship with the contemporary world. During the debate, the key role of Christian anthropology was indicated to treat this relationship as well. As a result of the debate the subcommittee decided to add to the Haubtmann project a new ecclesiological chapter: (“the Role of the Church in the modern world") of the pastoral constitution. This was a result of having brought into consideration Wojtyla's project which reflected the situation of Church behind the Iron Curtain at that time.

COMMUNITY DISCERNMENT AS A FUNDAMENTAL METHOD OF IMPLEMENTING SYNODALITY IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH AS INTENDED BY POPE FRANCIS
Summary
This article is a synthetic attempt to show the new elements that Pope Francis introduces when he presents his understanding of the realisation of synodality in the life of the Church. He exposes discernment as a fundamental method for the synodal Church, which can be seen in his teaching since the beginning of this pontificate. The text comprises four parts. The first sets out short the general ecclesiological assumptions of the present Synod on synodality. The second shows spiritual discernment itself as a method throughout history, and the third the application of this method in the life of the Church in Francis’ teaching. The last focuses on the sensus fidei as the theological ground of the synodal discernment process. The conclusion reveals the purpose of the application of discernment in the vision of the synodal Church as intended by Francis.

THE ESSENCE OF THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO JOSEPH RATZINGER
Summary
The author puts forwards a hypothesis relating to the interpretation of the thought of Joseph Ratzinger - Benedict XVI concerning the essence of the Church as the Body of Christ. Jesus Christ built His Church in a visible form through His choice of the Twelve, who were called to build a special community with Him. By building the Church, the Apostles participated in Christ's earthly mission. The essence of the Church does not lie in the very fact of its apostolic foundation, but in the event of the Last Supper, that is of the Eucharist, which marks the actualization of the Church. The Eucharist concretizes the Body of Christ in its "physical" and its risen dimension (Corpus Christi verum) as well as its social form, where Jesus is the Head of the body of all the baptised faithful (Corpus Christi mysticum), that is in the aspect of the integral Church. The Eucharist is a manifestation of both, the individual Body of Christ ("This is my Body" 1 Cor 11:24; Mk 14:22b) and the "social" Body of Christ's Church. Therefore, the essence of the Church is the community of Christ with the baptised faithful, whose sacramental participation actualizes of the Body of Christ through the Eucharist ("He is the Head of the Body - the Church" Col 1:18; cf. Eph 1:10; and we are "the Body of Christ and each of you is a part of it" 1 Cor 12:27, cf. 12:12-13). In other words, the essence of the Church lies in its being the Body of Christ in both of its aspects: individual and social, which are actualized through the Eucharist. Ratzinger himself also puts it in the following manner: "The Church is the People of God through the Body of Christ." In this sense, the Church is not only a sacramental sign (signum), but it is a matter of fact (res). This is how Ratzinger advocates the original Christian idea of a strong link between the Church and the Eucharist. By doing so, he opts for the full ontical, realist approach to theology, refuting the idealist stance. For Ratzinger, the Church is more than a sign. It constitutes the full reality of Christ as its Head in communion with the faithful as members of His Body.

THE CHURCH OF SAINTS AND THE CHURCH OF SINNERS
Summary
Any analysis of the problem of "the Church of saints and the Church of sinners" must start from defining the Church as such. First and foremost, the Church cannot be conceptually reduced to hierarchical structures, nor should be put on equal with the ecclesiastic institution. Instead, it must be seen as the personal communion of people with Jesus Christ. This view is originally expressed in Joseph Ratzinger's claim that "The Church is the people of God as the Body of Christ." This claim means that the Church does not create herself, that she is not a human creation, but she comes from God and it comprises the human co-element in the realization of the Divine Plan. In this sense, the Church is holy, yet, at the same time, she gathers sinners. This holiness relies on the unconditional grace of God's Incarnation. Indeed, the Holy Church realizes the will of God and she is His envoy to the universe, while the Church of sinners is a Church made of people, trying to transmit God's message to the world, despite the limits and sins of her members.

SAINT AUGUSTINE AND THE SYNODS OF NORTH AFRICA AT THE TURN OF THE 4TH AND 5TH CENTURIES
Summary
The synodal activity of the Church in North Africa at the Turn of the 4th and 5th Centuries, although on the one hand is astonishing with its dynamic development, on the other hand, also highlights the multiplicity and scope of problems that the African Church faced. Such outstanding pastors as, in particular, the Bishop of Carthage and the Primate of Proconsular Africa, Aurelius (391‒430) and the Bishop of Hippo, Augustine (396‒430), made synods an effective weapon in the fight against the Donatist schism and the heresy of Pelagianism. No less important matters of the synodal meetings convened at that time were matters related to the discipline of the clergy, the liturgy and the life of the Church. Synods (concilia) enjoyed their own seriousness and authority (auctoritas). Plenary synods in particular played a significant role among them. As a manifestation of episcopalcollegiality, they shed a lot of light on the relationship of African bishops to the Bishop of Rome, and are also a testimony to African ecclesial specificity and autonomy.
